Trending…. Capturing Real Life with Polaroid

Polaroid is back, and I’m loving how it captures real-life moments that feel untouched by AI—bringing a nostalgic vibe with its signature colors and the magic of instantly printed photos. There’s something so addictive about preserving a point-in-time moment that tells a deeper story. Unlike a digital camera, where you can take 100 shots and pick the best one, a Polaroid moment requires you to be present, ready to capture the raw emotions and authentic vibe of real life. It’s photography in its purest form, and I can’t get enough of it!

Just finished two rounds of film, and I’ve learned so much about capturing that perfect Polaroid moment. Here are some tips, do’s, and don’ts for making the most of your Polaroid photography.

ABOUT

Founded in 1937 by Edwin H. Land and George W. Wheelwright III, Polaroid revolutionized photography with the launch of the world’s first instant camera in 1947, enabling users to capture and develop photos instantly. Rooted in creativity, self-expression, and celebrating everyday moments, Polaroid embraces the beauty of imperfection and authenticity. Its unique color tones and instantly printed photos preserve raw, timeless memories, challenging photographers to slow down, frame the moment, and capture life as it truly is.

We’re thrilled to use the latest Polaroid Now+, which retains the brand’s nostalgic charm while incorporating modern features:
• Equipped with a twin-lens autofocus system for sharper, clearer shots.
USB-C rechargeable and capable of shooting up to 15 film packs per charge.
• Comes with a Polaroid app that digitizes your photos while maintaining the iconic colors and classic white border.
• Built with sustainability in mind, the camera is lightweight and made of 40% recycled materials.
• Shoots full-sized Polaroid film, standing out against smaller instant camera formats.
• Features double exposure and self-timer modes for creative flexibility.

MOMENTS

Title: Priceless Steak Smile

I love this shot of Ahiya smiling just as he was about to dive into Ruby Jack’s steak. Syoti Yugi was eager to experiment with the Polaroid and capture this loving moment of his Ahiya. This shot would have been hard to achieve if the parents were behind the camera—it’s the authentic connection and relaxed trust that only the best photographers are able to create with their subjects.

Title: Yugi-oh Strikes

This is the jubilant expression of Syoti Yugi after scoring his first strike in bowling while playing with his brothers and cousins. With limited Polaroid film and the camera in hand, I was ready, anticipating reactions each time someone delivered a strike. Capturing this ecstatic moment required patience and quick reflexes to seize the perfect shot as it happened.

Title: Semi-Kalbo yeah.

What made this moment priceless was Syoti’s wholesome bet with Ahiya Carlos: if he scored a strike, Carlos would have to get a semi-kalbo haircut. In this photo, Dhiya Joshua and Ahiya Carlos can be seen heckling each other in the background, while Syoti beams with a triumphant smile after his strike. Capturing such evocative photos requires patience and the readiness to seize the perfect emotional moment.

Title: I’m 17

Dhiya Joshua, a steak lover, celebrated his 17th birthday at Laurentino’s with a US Prime Rib-Eye and an Australian Porterhouse. They savored the two steaks cooked medium-rare, paired with truffle fries, creamy spinach, and a variety of sauces on the side. It was a seal of approval from the boys.

Title: WW or 33

Can you guess what Sahiya Raphael’s favorite pose means? Is it the double peace sign, the winner sign, or perhaps “33” representing his jersey number? The Polaroid developed with a large smudge, and this imperfection is embraced as part of the artistic process. It’s about creating instant art, where the photographer captures the emotional moment while embracing the unique imperfections that emerge as the photo develops for 15 minutes.

LESSONS

Restaurant shots with dark interiors often come out too dark. Avoid shiny surfaces that reflect the flash.

For better lighting, take outdoor shots with the sky or nature as the background.

Wear light-colored clothing or patterns for a better shot, as a single-color dark shirt may blend into a dark background.

White linen table settings are not ideal for capturing photos, as seen in the image above.

Group shots can be challenging, especially with contrasting bright colors from the TV. To get a better shot, keep the camera steady—using a tripod can help if you have one.

Make sure you have permission from the subject, as they may intentionally move, causing a blur in the photo.

Framing more of the billiard table could make this group photo more interesting, rather than just settling for a typical souvenir shot.

THOUGHTS

At first, I thought using a Polaroid was more of a gimmick, limited to taking souvenir photos. But now, I’m hooked on the art of the process. The photographer must be present to capture the moment, influencing how the final print develops through factors like temperature and external elements. While the printing is instant, it takes about 15 minutes for the Polaroid to fully process, with the color often leaning toward darker hues.

In the age of AI, real moments matter, and the nostalgic vibe of traditional photography resonates more than ever—especially with the younger market. As for me, I’m now addicted to it, but like in the old days, you still have to buy film to create art.

This is one of the best gifts for the creative person this Christmas season.
